Concurrent use of statins and thiazide diuretics in diabetes patients linked to diabetes progression but lowered kidney and cardiovascular risks. A retrospective study on Veterans with diabetes-initiating statins between 2003-2015 found thiazide-statin users had higher diabetes progression (68.1% vs. 65.6% in the calcium channel blocker group), but lower kidney progression (16.5% vs. 16.9%), and cardiovascular risk (14.6% vs. 15.7%). Total mortality rates were similar (19.7% each). While thiazides may worsen diabetes, they seem to offer cardiovascular and kidney protection. Clinicians advised close diabetes monitoring during concurrent thiazide-statin use.
