Associations of gene expression in blood with BMI and weight changes among women in the Norwegian Women and Cancer postgenome cohort

This study aimed to explore the connection between blood gene expression profiles and both current Body Mass Index (BMI) and past weight changes (WCs) in women without a cancer diagnosis, using the Norwegian Women and Cancer (NOWAC) postgenome cohort. Results revealed significant associations between BMI and gene expression; there were 2394 DEGs for obesity vs. normal weight, 769 for obesity vs. overweight, and 768 for overweight vs. normal weight comparisons. Additionally, when considering weight changes over time (WCQ3-Q1 and WCQ3-Q2), 169 DEGs were linked to BMI categories, some of which also correlated with weight changes. These findings suggest that the blood gene expression profiles reflect the systemic effects of obesity, particularly shifts in blood reticulocyte-erythrocyte ratios.
