Asymmetry of thalamic hypometabolism on FDG-PET/CT in neurofibromatosis type 1: Association with peripheral tumor burden

A groundbreaking retrospective study involving 22 adult NF1 patients and age-matched controls explored the intriguing link between thalamic hypometabolism observed in brain PET scans and peripheral nerve sheath tumors (PNSTs) characteristic of NF1. Thalamic FDG uptake reduction by 2.0 standard deviations in NF1 patients was identified, with left-right asymmetry increased by 1.3 standard deviations. Patients with ≥3 PNSTs exhibited higher thalamic hypometabolism. These findings suggest a potential association between NF1-related peripheral tumors and thalamic metabolic alterations, shedding light on the intricate pathophysiology involved.
