In a groundbreaking study, researchers have found that adjuvant atezolizumab plus bevacizumab significantly improves recurrence-free survival in patients at high risk for hepatocellular carcinoma recurrence after surgery or ablation. The study involved 668 patients, with those receiving the combination treatment showing improved outcomes compared to those under active surveillance. At the interim analysis, adjuvant atezolizumab plus bevacizumab led to better recurrence-free survival rates, with a hazard ratio of 0.72 (adjusted 95% CI 0.53–0.98), compared to active surveillance. However, 41% of patients on the combined treatment experienced grade 3 or 4 adverse events. While these findings are promising, longer follow-up is necessary to fully assess the treatment's benefit–risk profile. This study marks a significant advancement in adjuvant therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma, with potential implications for future patient care.
