Atherosclerosis of the iliac arteries for the prediction of erectile dysfunction and epistaxis in men undergoing abdominal CT scan

A retrospective cross-sectional study investigated the correlation between Erectile Dysfunction (ED), Epistaxis (ES), and the extent of iliac atherosclerosis. Out of 1272 male patients, 275 were analyzed and categorized into "no-mild" and "moderate-severe" ED groups. The study found a significant negative correlation between the IIEF-5 score and the calcium score, and the number of atherosclerotic lesions in the common iliac artery (CIA) and internal iliac artery (IIA). Notably, the number of atherosclerotic lesions in the iliac arteries was identified as an independent predictor of ED, suggesting its potential in identifying subclinical cardiovascular disease and evaluating the risk for future cardiovascular complications. No substantial correlation was observed between ES episodes and the parameters studied.
