Audiologic Follow‐up in Patients With Head and Neck Cancer Treated With Cisplatin and Radiation

The study evaluated the factors associated with adherence to ototoxicity monitoring among head and neck cancer patients treated with cisplatin and radiation therapy. The results showed that 74.8% of patients had at least one post-treatment audiogram, but follow-up rates dramatically decreased after six months. Patients without insurance and those with stage IV cancers were associated with complete loss of audiologic follow-up. Additionally, only 24.8% of patients recommended for a hearing aid received one. The study concluded that further research is needed to understand barriers to long-term audiologic follow-up and hearing aid utilization to decrease untreated hearing loss in cancer survivorship.
