Autonomic nervous system responses to social stimuli among autistic individuals

A meta-analysis exploring autonomic nervous system (ANS) responses in autistic individuals compared to neurotypicals revealed a small and statistically insignificant overall difference. However, significant distinctions were found in parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) activity, particularly during social interactions. The study also identified variations based on the type of physiological function measured and the level of participation required. These findings suggest a unique autonomic regulation in autistic individuals in social situations, emphasizing the importance of investigating the PNS in future research.
