“Weighting” the Evidence: How Much Bedaquiline Is Enough?

“Weighting” the Evidence: How Much Bedaquiline Is Enough?

The approval of bedaquiline in 2012 marked a significant advancement in tuberculosis (TB) treatment after four decades. Over the past 10 years, bedaquiline has proven to be a game changer in TB management, with observational data demonstrating its safety and effectiveness. The current focus is optimizing its use, including determining the best combination of medications, understanding bedaquiline resistance, and establishing the ideal treatment duration. This study using observational data suggests that a 6-month course of bedaquiline is likely sufficient for most patients, providing reassurance to clinicians. However, further research is needed to explore subgroups and the applicability of findings to newer regimens. Ensuring access to bedaquiline and supporting patients throughout treatment remains crucial to prevent resistance and maximize its benefits.
