A 20-month-old boy with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) received gene therapy with Zolgensma at NRS Medical College Hospital in West Bengal, the first such procedure in a government-run hospital in the state. Zolgensma, one of the world's most expensive drugs, costs Rs 17.5 crore for a single dose. The treatment, provided free through Novartis's Global Managed Access program, was led by Dr. Jasodhara Chaudhuri and her team. The Cure SMA Foundation of India assisted with the process, and the therapy must be administered before age two. Due to high costs and complex approvals, only about 45 children in India have received this treatment.

The paste maintained about 75% metabolic activity and better preserved cell viability, supporting further investigation as a medicament for regenerative endodontic procedures.

As a single-arm study, the findings are descriptive and require controlled confirmation.

The findings support phenotype-informed risk assessment and personalized prevention and treatment.
