Behavioural Outcomes and Neurodevelopmental Disorders Among Children of Women With Epilepsy

The study investigated the impact of fetal exposure to antiseizure medications (ASMs) on child development. Analyzing 456 pregnant women, including those with epilepsy, researchers followed their children up to 6 years old. The study found no overall difference in adaptive functioning between children of women with and without epilepsy. However, increasing ASM blood concentrations in the third trimester correlated with decreased functioning, particularly with levetiracetam and lamotrigine. The findings emphasized the need for psychiatric screening and support for women with epilepsy and their children.
