Biomarkers for prostate cancer detection and risk stratification

Although prostate cancer (PCa) is men's most commonly diagnosed cancer, most patients do not die from the disease. Prostate-specific antigen (PSA), the most widely used oncologic biomarker, has revolutionized screening and early detection, reducing the proportion of patients presenting with advanced disease. In the current article, the author's review test characteristics and clinical performance data for both serum and urine biomarkers to aid decisions regarding initial or repeat biopsies as well as tissue-based biomarkers aimed at risk stratifying patients and identifying those patients most likely to benefit from treatment versus surveillance or monotherapy versus multi-modal therapy.
