Birthweight is associated with clinical characteristics in people with recently diagnosed type 2 diabetes

A study explored the relationship between birthweight and clinical characteristics at the onset of type 2 diabetes. The study analyzed data from 6866 individuals with type 2 diabetes in Denmark, categorizing them based on birthweight. They found that lower birthweight (<3000 g) was associated with a 3.3-year younger age at diabetes onset, lower BMI, and smaller waist circumference for each 1000 g decrease in birthweight. However, low birthweight was also linked to more comorbidities, higher systolic blood pressure, less likelihood of family history of diabetes, and increased use of glucose-lowering and antihypertensive medications. The associations remained consistent even after considering genetic predisposition.
