The study explored the relationship between genetically predicted body mass index (BMI) and mortality in COPD patients. Using a polygenic score (PGSBMI), researchers found that a higher genetically predicted BMI is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular mortality (HR 1.29, 95% CI 1.12–1.49) but not respiratory or all-cause mortality. Moreover, individuals with discordantly low BMI compared to their genetically predicted BMI exhibited significantly higher all-cause (HR 1.57, 95% CI 1.41–1.74) and respiratory mortality (HR 2.01, 95% CI 1.61–2.51). These findings suggest that discordant BMI could serve as an indicator of heightened mortality risk in COPD.
