Boosting Exercise Adherence After Youth Concussions

A qualitative study examined factors motivating youth to adhere to post-concussion exercise regimens, involving interviews with 32 concussed youth and their parents. Persistent post-concussion symptoms (PPCS) affect approximately 30% of youth annually, with structured exercise improving recovery outcomes. Thematic analysis revealed four key motivators for exercise adherence: social support, accountability, goal setting, and structure. Using Self-Determination Theory (SDT), these factors were linked to fulfilling the psychological needs of relatedness, autonomy, and competence. Social support and accountability enhanced relatedness, goal setting promoted autonomy, and structured programs boosted competence. Findings suggest SDT can guide improved exercise prescription for concussed youth, warranting further research into its application for enhanced recovery outcomes.
