Can dietary proteins selectively reduce either the visceral or subcutaneous adipose tissues?

This review examines the specificity of five interventions in influencing these fat deposits in humans and rodents: dietary proteins, monounsaturated fatty acids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, calorie restriction, and bariatric surgery. Calorie restriction and bariatric surgery consistently reduce both tissue types. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids show inconsistent effects. Notably, dietary proteins, particularly whey proteins, demonstrate efficacy in reducing one or both tissue types through interactions with other dietary macronutrients. This specificity is attributed to shifts in gut microbiota composition and their metabolite production. The influence of host sex is also considered. These findings have implications for developing nutritional strategies to selectively deplete visceral or subcutaneous adipose tissues, ultimately enhancing metabolic health in diverse species, including humans.
