A prospective, population-based cohort study conducted in Denmark examined the association between cannabis use disorder (CUD) and the risk of affective disorders. The main outcomes were the diagnosis of psychotic or nonpsychotic unipolar depression or bipolar disorder. The study found that CUD was associated with an increased risk of unipolar depression, including both psychotic and nonpsychotic subtypes, as well as bipolar disorder in both men and women. The risk of psychotic bipolar disorder was higher compared to the nonpsychotic subtype. These findings have implications for cannabis use policies and regulation.
