Idiopathic subglottic stenosis (iSGS) is a condition that primarily affects women aged 30-60 years, but a small number of patients develop it later in life. A study compared patients who developed iSGS at the age of 65 or older to younger patients. The research found that the older group had higher rates of type 2 diabetes mellitus and tobacco use, but they did not require surgery more frequently than the younger patients. The study analyzed patient demographics, medical history, comorbidities, and treatment modalities. It concluded that alterations in wound healing and the higher rate of tobacco use may contribute to the development of iSGS in the elderly, while the higher rate of diabetes in the older population might have limited clinical significance in this context.
