Characteristics of oral squamous cell carcinoma focusing on cases unaffected by smoking and drinking: A multicenter retrospective study

This study aimed to identify distinct groups among oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients and examine the features of multiple primary carcinomas (MPCs). The data from 970 patients were analyzed, and three groups were formed: individuals below 45 years, smokers/drinkers aged 45 years and above, and non-smokers/non-drinkers aged 45 years and above. The findings revealed that tongue cancers were more prevalent in the group below 45 years compared to the other groups. The non-smokers/non-drinkers aged 45 years and above group was significantly older and more likely to be female. Men and smokers/drinkers were more prone to MPCs in the upper aerodigestive tract, while women were at risk of multiple primary OSCCs. These results suggest the presence of carcinogenic factors for OSCC other than smoking and drinking, as indicated by the subgroups and MPC characteristics.
