Childhood Weight Perception Modifies Obesity's Health Impact in Adulthood

Obesity in adulthood is linked to higher risks of mortality, cardiovascular disease, and obesity-related cancer. However, the impact of obesity on mortality and CVD was stronger in adults who recalled being thinner at age 10. Conversely, some evidence suggested stronger risks in those who perceived themselves as plumper. Genetic analyses did not support childhood weight perceptions modifying the association of obesity with health outcomes. Recall bias or confounding may explain these findings.
