Chronic kidney disease begets heart failure and vice versa; temporal associations between heart failure events in relation to incident chronic kidney disease in type 2 diabetes

Diabetes, chronic kidney disease (CKD) and heart failure (HF) frequently coexist and are major causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The study investigated the interplay of incident CKD and/or HF and their associations with prognosis in a large, population‐based cohort with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Among 102,488 patients, new‐onset CKD occurred in 14,798 patients (14.4%), in whom 21.7% had HF. Cardio‐renal complications are common and are associated with high mortality risk among patients with new‐onset T2DM. Close surveillance of these dual complications are crucial to reduce the burden of disease.
