In an observational clinical study, subgingival yeast carriage (SYC) was found to be significantly higher in cigarette smokers with peri-implant mucositis (PM) than in non-smokers. Eighty male participants were categorized into four groups based on smoking status and PM presence. Results indicated that the modified plaque index (mPI) and probing depth (PD) were significantly higher in cigarette smokers with PM compared to non-smokers and light smokers. The modified gingival index (mGI) was also elevated in non-smokers with PM. Additionally, SYC levels were markedly greater in smokers with PM. The findings suggest that peri-implant soft-tissue inflammation and SYC are exacerbated in moderate smokers, emphasizing the detrimental effects of cigarette smoking on oral health.
