Clinical Update on the Management and Prevention of Worsening Heart Failure by the Heart Failure Association (HFA) of the ESC

Patients with chronic heart failure often experience episodes of worsening symptoms and signs associated with poorer quality of life, increased hospitalization and mortality rates, and a significant burden on healthcare resources. These episodes usually require diuretic therapy, either intravenously or by the escalation of oral doses, and other treatments, including guideline-recommended oral medical therapy (GRMT). Prevention of first and recurring episodes of worsening heart failure is crucial and can be achieved through early and rapid administration of GRMT. The Heart Failure Association of the ESC has released a clinical consensus statement to provide an update on the definition, clinical characteristics, management, and prevention of worsening heart failure in clinical practice.
