Closed‐loop control of air supply to whole‐room indirect calorimeters to improve accuracy and standardize measurements during 24‐hour dynamic metabolic studies

The study aimed to test the use of proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control of air inflow rate in a whole-room indirect calorimeter to improve accuracy in measuring oxygen and carbon dioxide consumption. The researchers found that the PID controller allowed for a more stable CO2 concentration, resulting in more accurate estimates of V̇CO2 during static and dynamic infusions, including during exercise sessions. In addition, the study suggests that using PID control in a whole-room indirect calorimeter can lead to more accurate measurements of substrate oxidation during dynamic metabolic studies.
