Combining polygenic risk scores and human leukocyte antigen variants for personalized risk assessment of type 1 diabetes in the Taiwanese population

A genome-wide association study (GWAS) analyzed the genetic factors contributing to the risk and age at diagnosis of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) in the Taiwanese population. They developed a polygenic risk score (PRS) based on selected single-nucleotide polymorphisms. The PRS effectively predicted T1D risk, with a higher score associated with increased risk. Additionally, each unit increase in the PRS was linked to a decrease in the age at diagnosis. Combining the PRS with specific genetic variants further improved T1D risk prediction.
