Common cold-causing virus linked to potentially fatal blood clotting disorder, research finds

Adenovirus infection, a common respiratory virus causing mild cold and flu symptoms, has been linked to blood clots and low platelet levels for the first time. Published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the study presented two cases revealing the virus's association with an anti-platelet factor 4 (PF4) disorder. This newly recognized adenovirus-associated disorder joins the ranks of anti-PF4 disorders, where antibodies against platelet factor-4 lead to platelet removal and clotting. The findings aim to improve diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes for this life-threatening condition. Unlike heparin-related triggers, adenovirus seems implicated in this disorder. Previously, similar platelet-related issues were noted with some COVID-19 vaccines.
