A recent prospective cohort study from 2021 to 2022 delves into the pressing issue of culture-negative peritonitis, a severe complication affecting up to 40% of peritonitis cases in maintenance peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. The study scrutinizes the treatment responses and prognoses of patients with culture-negative versus culture-positive peritonitis. Among the 81 PD patients studied, 35 exhibited culture-negative and 46 culture-positive peritonitis. The primary outcome, defined as peritonitis resolution within 10 days of treatment initiation, occurred in 64.2% of cases overall, with comparable rates between culture-negative (68.6%) and culture-positive (60.9%) groups.
