Comparative Effectiveness of Intermittent Fasting Strategies for Weight Management in Obese Adults

A network meta-analysis compared the efficacy of three intermittent energy restriction (IER) forms – alternate-day fasting (ADF), the 5:2 diet, and time-restricted feeding (TRF) – in overweight or obese adults. ADF proved superior in reducing waist circumference compared to continuous energy restriction (CER) and the 5:2 diet. The 5:2 diet outperformed CER in lowering BMI. All IER forms showed comparable results for fat mass and drop-out rates. Sensitivity analyses confirmed ADF's effectiveness in weight and waist circumference reduction. The study recommends ADF for overweight or obese adults but calls for more high-quality research on TRF's impact.
