Comparative Risks of Infection with Belimumab versus Oral Immunosuppressants in Patients with Non‐Renal Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

In this study, researchers compared the risk of infection between belimumab and oral immunosuppressants for the treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). They analyzed observational data from a U.S. electronic health record database and identified SLE patients without lupus nephritis who initiated belimumab, azathioprine, methotrexate, or mycophenolate between 2011 and 2021. The results showed that belimumab had lower risks of serious infection and hospitalization than azathioprine, methotrexate, and mycophenolate. However, there were no differences in traumatic injury risks among the treatment groups. These findings suggest that belimumab may have a favorable risk/benefit profile for SLE treatment in terms of serious infection.
