A study comparing three conventional synthetic DMARD treatment approaches for rheumatoid arthritis patients in remission found that tapering or withdrawing the medication increased the risk of flare-ups over three years. Of the 156 patients analyzed, those on stable doses had an 80% chance of remaining flare-free, compared to 57% for those on half doses and 38% for those tapering off. Adverse events were more common in the tapering groups. Though drug-free remission was possible for some, the study suggests caution in adjusting DMARD doses due to increased flare risk.
