
This study focused on dynamic focusing cochlear implant strategies that aim to mimic natural cochlear excitation patterns. Previous studies had fixed channel interaction coefficients (K) across participants, potentially limiting speech perception benefits. This research tested individualized K values against fixed-K and monopolar strategies. Speech recognition in quiet and noise was similar on a group level, but individual-level analysis revealed some participants benefiting from dynamic focusing strategies in noisy environments. The extent of benefit was unclear, but associations were found between focused thresholds, duration of hearing loss, and individual-K benefit. Participants rated dynamic focusing as clear and easy to listen to, showing a willingness to use the strategies in a take-home trial. Further studies will explore acclimatization to dynamic focusing strategies.
