Comparing male and female pelvic floor muscle function by the number and type of pelvic floor symptoms

Pelvic floor symptoms (PFS) are common in both males and females and can include lower urinary tract symptoms, defecation problems, sexual dysfunction, and pelvic pain. A study was conducted to compare pelvic floor musculature (PFM) function between the sexes and to assess the function of both sexes with the number and type of PFS. The study found differences in muscle tone, maximum voluntary contraction (MVC), and endurance between male and female PFM function, with males showing increased EAS and PRM tone and females showing weaker MVC and dysfunctional endurance of both muscles. These findings provide useful insights into the differences in PFM function between males and females.
