Comparing the effectiveness, acceptability and oral hygiene status between vacuum formed retainer and Begg’s retainer”: a pilot study

The study aimed to compare the effectiveness, oral hygiene, and acceptability of Vacuum Formed Retainers (VFRs) and Begg's retainers as Orthodontic retention appliances with a follow-up period of one year. Eighty patients who completed fixed Orthodontic treatment were included, and both types of retainers were randomly allocated to both arches. Both retainers showed improvement in teeth alignment, with Begg's retainers maintaining better oral hygiene and improving marginal ridges. VFRs were aesthetically pleasing and had progressive improvement in interproximal contacts. The study concludes that both types of retainers have their advantages and can be preferred based on individual patient needs
