Comparison of 52-mg levonorgestrel system with combination oral contraceptives for treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding

A pragmatic randomized trial compared the 52-mg levonorgestrel intrauterine system with combined oral contraceptives in individuals with self-reported heavy menstrual bleeding. Although both treatments increased bleeding-related quality of life, no significant differences were observed at 6 or 12 months. In per-protocol analyses, a greater decrease in Menstrual Bleeding Questionnaire score was seen with the levonorgestrel intrauterine system at 6 months but not at 12 months. The findings suggest that both options are effective for improving bleeding-related quality of life.
