This cross-sectional study compared the submucosal microbiome composition of peri-implantitis with paired and unpaired healthy implant samples. Next-generation sequencing revealed significant differences in bacterial ratios, particularly in Filifactor alocis, Tannerella forsythia, and others between peri-implantitis and unpaired healthy implant samples. However, minimal differences were found between peri-implantitis and paired healthy implants. The study suggests that future microbiome studies should focus on samples from the same patient, especially those with a history of periodontitis.
