Comparison of the effect of hostility on the level of depression of drug addicts and non-addicts and the mediating role of sense of life meaning between them

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between drug use, hostility, depression, and sense of life meaning in drug addicts and non-addicts. The researchers recruited 415 drug addicts and 411 non-addicts in Chengdu, China, and collected data through questionnaires. The results revealed that drug addicts had higher levels of depression compared to non-addicts. Hostility worsened depression in both groups, but it had a greater impact on depression in drug addicts. Females reported higher levels of sense of life meaning than males. For drug addicts, a sense of life meaning mediated the relationship between social aversion and depression, while for non-addicts, it mediated the relationship between cynicism and depression. The study suggests that addressing depression is crucial for drug addicts, and improving their sense of life meaning can help reduce hostility and depression.
