This study in Iran focused on screening congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) in symptomatic newborns initially suspected of congenital rubella syndrome (CRS). Among 1629 infants with negative rubella IgM, 524 samples were selected based on cCMV complications. Testing included anti-HCMV IgM, HCMV IgG avidity assay, and HCMV DNA detection. Results revealed 3.67% positivity in infants aged one month and younger, with 12.5% showing low avidity. For infants older than one month to one year, the HCMV IgM detection rate was 14.5%. Genotype distribution included gB-1 (63.63%), gB2 (18.18%), and gB3 (18.18%). The study demonstrated a good correlation between serology and PCR findings.
