COPD Alters Brain Connectivity Linked to Cognitive Function

COPD affects the brain—not just the lungs. Using resting-state fMRI, this study found altered functional connectivity (FC) in specific brain regions of 41 COPD patients compared to 30 controls. Decreased and increased FC correlated with lower cognitive scores, worse symptoms, and reduced lung function. These findings suggest that COPD-related cognitive changes may be tied to measurable brain connectivity alterations, offering insight into underlying neurophysiological mechanisms.
