A new study has revealed evidence of gut dysbiosis in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and linked it to a potential mechanism for the development of the disease. The study found that patients with PAH had a distinct gut microbial signature with reduced plasma levels of anti-inflammatory short-chain fatty acids and secondary bile acids. Shotgun metagenomics revealed that patients with PAH had a higher relative abundance of several pro-inflammatory species, including Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, Parabacteroides distasonis, and Bacteroides vulgatus, and a lower relative abundance of some species with anti-inflammatory properties, such as Butyrivibrio sp. and Bifidobacterium angulatum. The study also found an association between gut dysbiosis and the development of pulmonary vascular disease but not right ventricular malfunction. However, the study has some limitations, such as age discrepancies and reduced comorbidities in the healthy individuals compared to other groups. The findings expand research horizons for PAH, opening doors for future therapeutic approaches and preventive strategies.
