This study looked at the association between race and ethnicity and clinical outcomes (need for mechanical ventilation and mortality) in patients with severe COVID-19. The study population included 2931 patients, stratified into three subgroups: non-Hispanic White, non-Hispanic Black, and Hispanic. Black and Hispanic patients were at increased odds of needing mechanical ventilation compared to White patients, but there were no statistically significant differences in the odds of death between these groups when adjusting for age. Hispanic patients had lower mortality rates than White patients, which may be explained by their younger age. The study highlights the importance of outreach efforts to communities of color to increase prevention measures and vaccination uptake to reduce COVID-19 infections.
