COVID-19 May Elevate Risk of New-Onset Dementia in Older Adults

A meta-analysis of 11 studies (939,824 COVID-19 survivors and 6,765,117 controls) indicates a 1.58-fold increased risk of new-onset dementia (NOD) in older adults post-COVID-19 infection compared to non-COVID controls. NOD incidence was 1.82% among COVID survivors versus 0.35% in controls, with risks persisting over 12 months (RR = 1.56). COVID-19 shares a comparable NOD risk with other respiratory infections (RR = 1.13). Longer-term studies are needed to further evaluate this link.
