A recent study highlights a concerning link between COVID-19 and the development or hastening of neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's disease and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). These conditions share a commonality: converting human proteins into misfolded, amyloid fibrils. The study has uncovered a possible mechanism where SARS-CoV-2 spike protein can form amyloid fibrils when cleaved by neutrophil elastase during the COVID-19 inflammatory response and in vitro experiments revealed that Spike-amyloid fibrils can significantly accelerate amyloid formation in CJD-associated prion proteins and Alzheimer 's-associated Aβ1-42. These findings suggest a potential link between COVID-19 and neurodegenerative diseases, although further research is needed.
