Creatine Supplementation Reduces Seizures in Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy

This study assessed the effects of prophylactic fetal creatine supplementation in reducing acute asphyxia-induced seizures, EEG abnormalities, cerebral inflammation, and cell death in a sheep model of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). Fetal sheep were infused with creatine or saline before undergoing umbilical cord occlusion (UCO). Creatine supplementation improved EEG recovery, reduced seizure incidence (86% in saline vs. 29% in creatine group), and reduced cell death and astrogliosis in the brain after 72 hours. These findings suggest creatine's potential in mitigating HIE-induced brain injury.
