A recent study in Malaysia has explored the viability of using creatinine clearance as an alternative method for assessing renal function in living kidney donors. In this retrospective single-center study of 105 living kidney donor candidates spanning from 2007 to 2020, researchers compared creatinine clearance against the 51-Chromium ethylenediamine-tetraacetic acid (51Cr-EDTA) method. The results revealed that creatinine clearance slightly overestimated GFR compared to 51Cr-EDTA but showed a significant correlation. The study concludes that, in the absence of exogenous markers, creatinine clearance could serve as an affordable and acceptable alternative for assessing donor renal function.
