Curcumin relieves arecoline‐induced oral submucous fibrosis via inhibiting the LTBP2/NF‐κB axis

Curcumin, a compound found in turmeric, has been found to alleviate oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) caused by arecoline, a chemical found in betel nuts. Researchers have discovered that curcumin reduces the viability of oral mucosal fibroblast cells, promotes cell apoptosis, suppresses cell migration, and decreases the levels of fibrosis markers and inflammatory factors. It does this by inhibiting the hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), which binds to the promoter of LTBP2 and activates its transcription. LTBP2 knockdown further relieves OSF, and curcumin inhibits LTBP2 to alleviate OSF by reducing NF-κB pathway activation. This study provides insights into the pharmacological mechanism of curcumin in treating OSF.
