This prospective study assesses plasma d-dimer levels in 45 stage IV lung cancer patients, comprising 22% small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and 78% non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Despite using a cut-off point of 500 ng/ml, indicative of thromboembolic disease (TE), 93% of patients exhibit elevated d-dimer levels (100% in SCLC, 91% in NSCLC). Interestingly, none of these elevated levels corresponded to TE, suggesting limited utility in using d-dimer for TE screening in metastatic lung cancer.
