Dacryocystitis and Canaliculitis in Northern China: Microbiology, Causes, and Antibiotic Strategies

The prospective study was conducted in a prominent tertiary ophthalmic teaching and referral hospital in northern China and focused on 477 participants diagnosed with dacryocystitis or canaliculitis. The study delved into microbiological isolates, aetiology, complications, antibiotic susceptibilities, and clinical remission. Results revealed a higher susceptibility in women, with 12.4% having definitive causes and 27.7% reporting ocular complications. Staphylococcus epidermidis was the predominant microorganism. Antimicrobial susceptibility varied among bacterial groups. Remission rates with pharmacological therapy were highest for acute dacryocystitis (72.7%). The study recommends preventive measures, postoperative cleansing, and proactive rhinitis management.
