Dapagliflozin Shows No Significant Benefit in Critically Ill Patients with Organ Dysfunction: Study

A multicenter randomized clinical trial conducted across 22 intensive care units assessed the efficacy of adding dapagliflozin, an SGLT-2 inhibitor, to standard ICU care for patients with acute organ dysfunction. The study involved 507 participants upon unplanned ICU admission with respiratory, cardiovascular, or kidney dysfunction. Results indicated no significant improvement in the composite primary outcome of hospital mortality, initiation of kidney replacement therapy, and ICU length of stay at 28 days (win ratio 1.01, 95% CI 0.90-1.13; P = .89). The study's findings suggest dapagliflozin did not confer additional clinical benefit, though further research may be warranted due to the wide confidence intervals.
