The study aimed to investigate the association between sonographic septations and inflammatory and fibrinolysis-associated proteins in pleural fluid (PF) with confirmed pleural infection and their correlation with clinically important outcomes. The study found that PF PAI-1 was independently associated with septation presence and severity, as well as increased length of stay and 12-month mortality. However, sonographic septations alone had no relation to clinical outcomes. The study suggests that PF PAI-1 plays a role in driving septation formation, but further prospective validation is needed.
