Deep Learning Assessment of Progression of Emphysema and Fibrotic Interstitial Lung Abnormality

Smokers with emphysema and fibrotic interstitial lung abnormalities face a higher mortality risk, according to a study by the COPDGene Study. Researchers used deep learning algorithms to assess 4,450 smokers' lung health over 5 years. Results revealed that even minor fibrosis changes of 0.58% were clinically meaningful. Of the participants, 6.2% experienced progression in emphysema and fibrosis, putting them at the highest risk with a mortality hazard ratio of 2.18. This study highlights the importance of monitoring these conditions and suggests that even small fibrosis changes should be noticed in smokers with known interstitial lung disease.
