Determinants of respectful maternity care at a tertiary care teaching institute in South India: A mixed‐methods study

A study conducted in South India aimed to determine the prevalence of disrespect and abuse (D&A) experienced by postpartum women during labor and postpartum. Results showed that 85% of women experienced D&A according to USAID-MCHIP standards, but only 33% perceived it as such. Non-dignified care was the most common form of D&A. Factors associated with D&A included women over 25 years old, emergency referrals, having a recommendation letter, and having relatives working at the healthcare facility. These findings highlight the need for improved respectful maternity care to ensure the well-being and dignity of women during childbirth and postpartum care.
